Who we are

Our website URL is: https://smartinthedark.com.

Which personal data we collect and why we collect it

When visitors leave comments on the website, we collect the data shown in the comment form as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are registered there. The Gravatar service policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment has been approved, your profile image will be visible to the public along with your comment.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you leave a comment on our website, you can choose to save your name, email address and website in cookies. This is for your convenience, so that you do not have to fill in these details again next time you write a comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our log-in page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie does not contain any personal data and will disappear when you close your web browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your log-in information and your screen display choices. If you check off “Remember me”, your cookie will be available for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the log-in cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an extra cookie will be saved in your web browser. This cookie contains no personal details but simply the post-ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this website may contain embedded content (e.g. video clips, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites can collect information about you, use cookies, embed further tracking from third parties and monitor your interaction with this embedded content, including tracking of your interaction with this content if you have an account and are logged in to the website in question.

How long we retain your data

Who we share your data with

If you write a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so that we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal data they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit or delete their personal data at any time (with the exception that they cannot change their username). The website’s administrators can also see and edit this information.

Which rights you have over your data

If you have an account or have written any comments on this website, you can request an exported file of the personal data we have about you, including all data you have given us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we have about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to store for administrative, legal or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Comments from visitors may be checked via an automated spam detection service.
